He studied at the University of Pennsylvania and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He began his career working for various architects in Philadelphia and New York City. In 1873, he opened his architectural firm. He designed several notable buildings in New York City, including the Dakota Apartments, the Waldorf Astoria, and the Plaza Hotel.

He died in 1928.
